It seems just as stupid of an idea in real life as it did in Final Fantasy 8. Though since 8 is my favorite Final Fantasy I was somewhat tempted to buy one.

Real life: Pistol with bayonet. Notably less stupid than FF8, which had a charge fired to make the blade vibrate or something, i.e. not actually shoot, and caused the blade to feature a handle impractical for swinging. This is for stabbing.
